Education

The Sedalia Symphony is dedicated to providing educational opportunities to central Missouri through quality musical performances, local strings programs, and exciting scholarship opportunities.

Scholarship

The Sedalia Symphony is excited to support continuing music education through the Harold J. Johnston Memorial Scholarship. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to outstanding high school instrumentalists (strings, woodwind, brass, or percussion) from Sedalia and surrounding areas.

The students will perform before a panel of judges, and the two highest scores will perform at the Smith-Cotton High School Heckart Performing Arts Center for the Sedalia Symphony Spring Concert on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 7:30 pm. For questions, please call Lori Broyles at (660) 620-7299.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

  • Student must have a 3.0 grade point average (B average).
  • Student must currently perform in a school ensemble, band, or orchestra.
  • Student must be recommended by their ensemble director.
  • Student must be graduating in 2025.
  • Student must send a statement of character and verification of grade point average from the principal or counselor at their current school.
  • Student must live within a 30-mile radius of Sedalia.
  • Student must be present in person to perform on the date of the audition.

 

Audition Information

Sedalia, MO

  • Performances must be string, woodwind, brass, or percussion.
  • The student must prepare a solo piece to perform. Contest pieces are acceptable.
  • The student must bring three copies of their music for the judges.
  • The student must bring their own accompanist.
  • The Audition Committee reserves the right to withhold the scholarship if none of the applicants are of sufficient proficiency.

 

Scholarship Recipient Information 

  • The scholarship will be awarded in two $500 increments, one per semester.
  • The recipients must participate in a college or university orchestra or band each semester they receive the scholarship.
  • The recipients must perform at the Sedalia Symphony Spring Concert, Monday, April 28, 2025, 7:30pm.
  • The recipients must provide documentation of enrollment and acceptance into college.
  • The recipients must provide documentation of enrollment in an orchestra or ensemble.
